Bknapp – SNES Beats [ Review ]

Illinois beatmaker, Bknapp, brings us the third installment of his video game remix series, SNES Beats. SNES Beats Vol. 3 was created by sampling tracks from games on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, or SNES, and combining them with hip-hop style beats.

Jam-packed with chilled-out grooves, SNES Beats Vol. 3 fills the listener with both incredible nostalgia and relaxation. The music evokes the style of sample based electronic music from the 90’s and early 2000’s.

Producers would try to find obscure samples from old films and vinyl records and cut them up to include them in their productions to add flavor and something memorable for the listener to grab on to. It echoes back to producers like Nujabes, the Prodigy, Fatboy Slim, and the Crystal Method.

Just like old records, Bknapp uses SNES game soundtracks as his samples. He cuts them up, arranges them, and then adds additional instrumentation to create these masterful tracks. Some of the soundtracks that are sampled: Super Mario World, F-Zero, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Donkey Kong Country 1 & 2, Chrono Trigger, and more.

All the tracks on the album are short and sweet, clocking under two minutes. However, their brevity makes you want to listen on repeat that much more. Don’t forget to check out SNES Beats Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 for more of these awesome tunes.

SNES Beats Vol. 3 can be downloaded from Bandcamp for $1. You can follow Bknapp on Soundcloud for more music.
